Baby's Birthday Scrapbook Page Ideas

A few weeks ago, I met Melanie who is expecting her first child. I was happy to discover that she is also a digital scrapbooker! I want to share with her a few of my favorite baby layouts that I did for my kids to give her some ideas for her baby's book. Unfortunately, Melanie lives on the opposite side of the state so I decided to write this post and share it with her and you!

Kara is 4 and Colin is 2. I was still paper scrapbooking when they were born but started with digital scrapbooking just as Colin turned 1. Here are some of my favorite layouts that I did for my kids. (NOTE: Please excuse the photography of the paper layouts – another reason Why I Love Digi. Also I never kept track of my paper scrapbooking supplies so I have no credits for those layouts.)

Baby Bumps
I started scrapbooking for my babies before they were born! I took belly photos throughout my pregnancy holding signs showing how far along I was at that time.

For Kara's baby bump photos my signs showed the number of weeks. That was confusing for people because we all think of pregnancy as lasting for 9 months (36 weeks) but it actually lasts for 40 weeks.

When I was pregnant with Colin, I decided to take the monthly approach.

If I had to do it again, I think I would wear the same maternity shirt for all the photographs and use my fingers to show the months instead of holding a sign.

Monthly Chair Photos
My favorite baby layouts are of the monthly photos that I took of my kids in their toddler chair. Kara's photos had her sitting in the chair with my cabbage patch doll Annabelle.

At first the Kara sat in the chair with her doll but at 5 months they couldn't both fit. In Kara's 11 month chair photo I had to put cheerios all over the chair to get her to sit in it. She's actually holding one in her hand.

You don't need to create a scrapbook layout to showcase these precious photos! I have this frame in our hallway.

Colin sat in the chair with a large giraffe that perfectly matched the colors in our Hawaiian themed nursery.

I had to work hard to get those chair photos of Colin. Not only did I have the normal squirmy child but I also had Kara who wanted to help and be in the pictures too! The effort was completely worth it!

UPDATE 9/30/11: I had many requests for a digital template for the monthly photos so here are two new templates that I have available. The templates are fully layered so you can alter it as you wish or just add photos for a finished layout!

Project 365
I found out about Project 365 at the end of 2008. Project 365 is the process of documenting your life using a photo a day. I started our first family Project 365 in January of 2009. When Colin was born in February of 2009 I started a separate Project 365 for him. Colin's Project 365 had photos of him and things relating just to him. This was on top of the regular scrapbook layouts that I did for him.

The head in the photo belongs to Colin. He LOVES looking at his Project 365 album so he ran right over when I got the album out to take a photo. Right after this photo was taken Kara also ran over and they looked at the album together – such a wonderful reminder of why I scrapbook.

For Colin's Project 365 I used paper and embellishments from my stash. Each week the paper and the journaling cards changed to either match the photos or the time of year. This is the idea that I had for the title page.

I created a 12×12 digital layout and cropped it into size 6×4 photos. I just love it!

Supplies that I used for Colin's First Year Project 365:

  • album – (affiliate link) We R Memory Keepers Faux Leather 12×12 3-Ring Binder Album
  • photo sleeves – (affiliate link) We R Memory Keepers 12×12 3-Ring Photo Sleeve Refills with 6×4 Pockets

Sometimes I consider the idea of re-creating Colin's First Year Project 365 digitally so that I can make multiple copies of it for me, him and our family members. This  would not be too difficult because I have all the photos labeled and I can use my digital Project 365 Templates.

Presidential Greeting
Did you know that you can request a presidential birth greeting from the White House?

When I did this for Kara, George W. Bush was still president and all I had to do was fill out an online form. Colin was born just after President Obama was inaugurated. For his presidential birth greeting, I sent a letter to:

The White House
Attn: Greetings Office
Washington, D.C. 20502-0039

You need to include the following information:

  • Name of baby
  • Address of baby
  • Date (month, day, year) of birth
  • Your name and daytime phone number

You will received a card "signed" by President Obama and the First Lady. The envelope will have your baby's name and address handwritten on it. The two items together make a wonderful keepsake. The presidential birth greeting must be requested within baby's first year. I requested our greetings a few weeks after birth.

Solid Food
I kept a spreadsheet of when my kids tried foods for the first time and how they liked it. Columns for the spreadsheet were: food, date started, days, notes. This is the second page of Kara's solid food layout.

For this layout:

  • print the spreadsheet out on cardstock
  • mount the spreadsheet on patterned paper
  • create a pocket with staples (the photos cover up the staples I used to staple the photo mat to the background cardstock)
  • insert the spreadsheet

I hope you found some ideas you can use for your baby. Have a great weekend!
